Last week I shared with you my Lighter Coney Sauce and mentioned a few different things you can do with that sauce. Here's one that kids and adults will love! It's super budget friendly, and it's super easy to make. This is a perfect recipe to get the kids in the kitchen to help out.

What is Needed?

Just a handful of ingredients are needed to make this easy and delicious Lighter Chili Cheese Crescent Dogs. You'll need:

  • 1 can of refrigerated reduced-fat crescent roll dough
  • 1 recipe for Lighter Coney Sauce
  • 1 cup reduced fat Mexican blend cheese
  • 8 hot dogs, use either 97% reduced fat all beef hot dogs, which Hebrew National makes the best ones or chicken hot dogs work well too. I use Simple Truth Uncured Chicken Dogs that I find at Kroger and they're great! No one was the wiser. The reduced fat Hebrew National beef hot dogs are no longer available anywhere where I live, but if you can get those, by all means, use them. They're wonderful!

Don't forget your toppings! Optional toppings can include diced red onion, sliced jalapenos, chopped fresh cilantro, whatever you like!

How to Make Lighter Chili Cheese Crescent Dogs

So easy! Just separate your crescent dough into triangles. Set 1 hot dog on the wide end of the crescent roll. Sprinkle with a little cheese and roll them up. Place on prepared pan. Bake them for about 18 minutes or so, or until they're golden brown. Then take to serve them up, just place them on a plate, top with your Lighter Coney Sauce and your favorite toppings. That's it!

WW Freestyle SmartPoints Comparrison

This recipe was adapted from Diary of a Recipe Collector. Her recipe is outstanding of course, but it's also 13 freestyle points. I loved it so much and it's such a life saver recipe during the week when you're in a rush, and everyone here loves it, that I wanted to make it healthier so I could enjoy it more often. My revamp of the original brought it down from 13 points to 8 points! Now that's something I can get behind. 7 freestyle points for 1 crescent dog and 1 point for the sauce. That's calculated using the chicken dogs. If you use Hebrew National 97% fat free beef hot dogs, it would bring the points down to 6. That's 5 for the crescent dog, and 1 for the sauce. Either way, tastes like victory!

What to Serve with Lighter Chili Cheese Crescent Dogs?

To keep freestyle points low, when enjoying this dish, I like to serve it along with a salad of mixed greens, cucumber and tomato, and dress it with a fat free zesty Italian dressing. You can add any number of fresh 0 point veggies to your salad that you love and at that point, you're only counting the dressing. With a salad like that, and 1 crescent dog loaded with sauce and freebie toppings, that's a winner dinner!
